The ancient salt transport canal, which was constructed during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 24), spans through Yangzhou, Taizhou, and Nantong. The canal was later connected with the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, leading to the expansion of Taizhou's salt industry and the gradual emergence of a distinctive salt tax culture.

Within Taizhou, the Jiangsu Salt Tax Museum, which is situated along the ancient canal, is the only exhibition hall of its kind in the province and it offers a fascinating glimpse into the historical records and the bustling administrative work associated with tax collection during ancient times.
