The city of Taizhou – in East China's Jiangsu province – experienced a surge in consumer spending during the New Year's Day holiday, sparked by a series of promotional events orchestrated by the Taizhou Bureau of Commerce.

The initiative yielded significant economic benefits, according to official reports.

Some 50 benchmark businesses became the focal point of these efforts. Sales figures released showed they generated revenue of 192 million yuan ($27 million), marking a hefty 17.5 percent year-on-year increase.

The performance by Jingjiang, a county-level city under the jurisdiction of Taizhou, was a standout. It homed in on bolstering consumer spending across five major sectors – including retail department stores, restaurants and other dining outlets and home appliance markets.

This strategy proved to be a resounding success, with the 10 top monitored enterprises within these sectors reporting 11.82 million yuan in sales, translating into a whopping 35 percent year-on-year gain.

Xinghua city, also under Taizhou's administration, was another to post a really positive outcome. Sales from nine key enterprises reached 17.69 million yuan. Similarly, in the Hailing district, nine central enterprises achieved substantial revenues totaling 65.33 million yuan.

Overall, the commerce bureau has been focused on ensuring a stable market environment and securing a smooth supply of essentials.

A daily monitoring system was put into place before the holiday period to closely track market trends and maintain market order.

Moreover, safety inspections in various districts and counties were ramped up – targeting restaurants, large commercial complexes and supermarkets to uphold safety standards and production.

These proactive measures are said to have played an integral role in ensuring both robust economic activity and consumer safety throughout the festive season.
