Taizhou has unveiled its first-ever regional field guide dedicated to all documented bird species within the city — A Field Guide to the Birds of Taizhou. The publication records 290 species of wild birds and includes over 1,000 original photographs, making it a crucial resource for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Compiled over the course of two years by environmental specialists, the guide integrates continuous monitoring data to present a detailed look at bird populations and changes in their habitats. According to Zhou Kouhong, deputy director of the Taizhou Environmental Monitoring Center, the book features contributions from 40 bird photographers and technical staff, documenting nearly one-fifth of all bird species found in China.

The guide organizes the 290 bird species into six ecological groups: waterfowl, waders, land birds, raptors, climbing birds, and songbirds. Each species is illustrated with three to five high-quality images.

One of the standout features is the integration of artificial intelligence. By scanning QR codes, readers can access audio recordings of bird calls, watch videos of bird behavior, and even engage with an AI assistant that answers bird-related questions. Users can also upload their own bird photos and receive AI-generated feedback.

"Birds are the most visible wild animals around us, yet because of their small size and elusive behavior, they are often overlooked," said Sun Haitao, editor-in-chief of the guide. He added that while the guide focuses on Taizhou species, it also includes many birds commonly seen throughout the Yangtze River Delta.

Special features such as bird migration mysteries, parasitic nesting strategies, raptor flight mechanics, and magpie social behaviors add educational depth and intrigue to the reading experience.

The guide serves not only as a practical tool for amateur and professional birdwatchers but also as a public science resource, transforming environmental monitoring data into something that can be enjoyed and explored by all.
