In recent years, Taizhou has prioritized water quality and management through its "Beautiful Waters for a Happy Life" initiative. So far, the city has restored 2,754 rivers and lakes and plans to improve another 300 this year. The program is providing ecological, social, and economic advantages throughout the region.
In Sanqiao village, Hongqiao town, Taixing, Maojiawei River was once littered with garbage, making crossing over waste easier than using a ferry. Now, due to comprehensive cleanup efforts, the river is connected to the village's waterways and is surrounded by trees and greenery.
"Now villagers enjoy spending time by the river for leisure and exercise," said Xia Jun, Party secretary of Sanqiao village. The enhanced environment has also boosted rural tourism potential. A scenic corridor, camping site, and fishing center have already been developed, drawing visitors from outside the area. Once the planned resort is finished, the village anticipates that collective annual income will increase by 500,000 yuan ($70,008).
Public participation plays a key role in the program. Taizhou has over 5,200 river chiefs, nearly 3,000 of whom are volunteers. Since 2022, they have carried out nearly 400,000 patrols and resolved about 20,000 issues.
Jiangyan district has introduced a "points bank" system, allowing residents to earn redeemable points through river patrols and cleanup activities. Since its launch, over 100,000 citizens have participated.
By improving water environments and promoting community involvement, Taizhou is transforming its rivers and lakes into hubs of health, recreation, and prosperity — significantly increasing happiness among local residents.
