The new Gao Ershi Memorial was unveiled in Jiangyan district, Taizhou city in East China's Jiangsu province on April 28 to commemorate the artist.

Gao Ershi (1903-77) was a prominent Chinese artist during the 20th century due to his calligraphy, poetry and Sinology. His ability to write caoshu, or cursive script, is most well-known.

The new memorial covers 8,580 square meters, featuring a plaque, cursive script works in different styles and a bronze statue.

"I created the statue of Gao 20 years ago and it has been in the old museum for many years," said famed Chinese sculptor Wu Weishan, who is also the director of the National Art Museum of China.

Wu said that the calligraphic works of Gao that we see today not only reflect his humanistic ideals, but also his unwavering belief in traditional culture.

"Moreover, in these works, one can also see Gao's lofty personality and his spirit of commitment to academic truth. This is a typical characteristic of Chinese culture, so there is no doubt that Gao is the inheritor of ancient culture and the creator of modern culture," Wu added.
