The Jiangyan district of Taizhou city – located in East China's Jiangsu province – has made great strides in its water resource management over the past number of years.

Its capacity for conservation and the governance of its local rivers and lakes has improved by leaps and bounds, through the implementation of a River Chief System.

This is a network of leading officials who are appointed to be responsible for overseeing the condition of specific bodies of water and are tasked with making a consistent effort to improve water-related laws and regulations.

To date, about 60,000 people have engaged in the protection and governance of rivers and lakes in Jiangyan district, as well as 6,143 boats and 2,650 vehicles designed to salvage about 25,000 tons of clogging water hyacinths.

Moving forwards, plans are in motion for the district to continue to implement the River Chief System, so that more and more water bodies and river basins can be rejuvenated to benefit the public.
