The countdown is on for the 2026 Qintong Boat Festival, which will take place on April 6 at Qinhu National Wetland Park in Jiangyan district, Taizhou city.
As a national intangible cultural heritage, the Qintong Boat Festival is renowned as the world's largest temple fair held on water. Its roots trace back to a Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279) tradition of paying tribute to fallen soldiers around the time of the Qingming Festival. Over time, it has evolved into a magnificent folk celebration.
This year, the festival is giving ancient heritage a new lease on life.
One of the major highlights is a large-scale immersive performance, weaving together a complete storyline that takes audiences on a journey through ancient origins, spirited competition, enduring traditions, and timeless celebrations.
Eight teams from seven universities will participate in a bamboo pole boat race, infusing youthful energy into the ancient tradition with a thrilling display of speed and skill.
This grand event is not just an awe-inspiring water festival; it's an open window into the heart of Jiangyan.
Visitors from cities with the Chinese character "州" in their names can enjoy free entry to 11 scenic spots in Taizhou city, including Qinhu National Wetland Park and Qintong Ancient Town.
Additionally, the festival offers new and exciting experiences, such as virtual reality boat racing, hanfu garden tours, and traditional craft activities.
