Over the past three decades, Jiangyan district has transformed its oil and gas equipment industry from basic machining to high-end deep-sea equipment manufacturing.
The industry first took root in Baimi town with drill pipe processing. Today, Jiangyan has 256 oil and gas equipment companies, including 58 above-designated-size enterprises, forming a complete industrial chain covering drilling, production, gathering, transportation and services.
In 2025, the industry's invoiced sales exceeded 10 billion yuan ($1.50 billion). Jiangyan has also been recognized as a provincial export base for oil and gas equipment and is now working toward becoming a national base for high-end offshore oil and gas equipment.
Deep-sea operations have become a major area of technological innovation.
Jiangsu Shenwang Group Wire Rope, based in the Jiangyan Economic Development Zone, has developed a specialized steel wire rope for deep-sea drilling that operated continuously for 624 days on an offshore drilling platform in the South China Sea, exceeding the average service life of comparable international products.
Shuguang Huayang Drilling Tool has similarly expanded its product range from conventional drill pipes to deep-water drilling equipment. Its deep-water drill pipes, engineered to withstand higher pressure and corrosion demands, have been exported to more than 20 countries and regions.
To strengthen its innovation ecosystem, Jiangyan has established an academicians' workstation, a provincial key laboratory and 19 provincial-level enterprise technology centers. In the past three years, local companies have secured more than 130 invention patents.
