Shipbuilders in Taixing city – administered by Taizhou city in East China's Jiangsu province – report they've steadfastly maintained high production levels in a great start to the year.

Jiangsu Yangzi Xinfu Shipbuilding Co Ltd operates one of the star shipyards in the city. Its fourth container ship built for Canada-based Seaspan Corp, the MSC · Marie – which can carry more than 16,000 standard-sized containers – was delivered and left the factory on the afternoon of Feb 24.

With a total length of about 366 meters, the ship can carry up to 16,616 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, of containers.

The shipbuilding industry is a traditional competitive industry in Taixing – and a vital support for the city's economic transformation and upgrading in the new era, said Ji Huacheng, deputy director of Taixing's bureau of industry and information technology.

In recent years, Taixing's shipbuilding and repairs industry has developed rapidly and has become an important supporting force for the engineering equipment sector in the cities of Nantong, Taizhou and Yangzhou – all located in Jiangsu province – as well as boosting the region's high-tech shipbuilding advanced manufacturing cluster.

At present, Taixing's key shipbuilders hold 37 orders on their books for new builds, with a total value of $6.55 billion and deadweight of 6.08 million metric tons.
