In a modest exhibition hall in Huangqiao town, Taixing, Jiangsu province, a single display case tells the story of how a rural Jiangsu community became the global epicenter of violin production.
The Qinyun Town City Room, serving as a venue integrating science popularization, craftsmanship display, cultural heritage preservation, and industrial science education, traces the industry's unlikely origins to 1968, when returning workers founded a commune instrument accessories workshop.
From crafting heads and bows, generations of artisans refined their skills until Huangqiao violins reached Brazil and other South American markets in the 1980s, opening the first chapter of the town's export story.
Today, the hall houses more than 200 instruments from around the world, including two masterworks: a gold-medal violin by Zheng Quan, a professor at the Central Conservatory of Music, crafted during his studies in Italy, and a tone-award winner by Hua Tianreng that represents China's top luthier standards.

Another section details the 197-step journey from wood selection to final tuning, spotlighting local innovator Li Shu, whose bio-modification technology for timber earned a national science prize and solved a longstanding tone-quality challenge.
The human thread runs just as deep. Master craftsman Xu Xiaofeng, after more than two decades of hand-building, has seen his instruments presented as United Nations diplomatic gifts while training over 100 apprentices.
The numbers confirm the scale of the transformation. Huangqiao now hosts over 220 violin and accessory enterprises, producing more than 1 million instruments annually. The town commands 70 percent of China's domestic market and 40 percent of global supply, shipping to more than 90 countries and providing employment for over 30,000 residents.
