In February 2005, the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government decided to set up "a medical industry park and a Chinese medical city" in Taizhou city – located in East China's Jiangsu province – after thorough research.

As a result, in November 2006 construction started on the Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone.

In March 2009, it was upgraded to a national-level high-tech zone, becoming the only medical high-tech zone in the country at the time.

Currently, the Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone ranks 74th among 169 national high-tech zones and ranks 12th among 215 national biomedical parks.

The total land area of the zone is 404.5 square kilometers, with a population of 540,000 people and 25,500 resident enterprises.

In 2021, the zone's GDP was 110.69 billion yuan ($15.86 billion), up 11 percent year-on-year and the total industrial output value above scale was 209.88 billion yuan, up 29.4 percent. The zone's total amount and increase of its main economic indicators remain at the forefront of Taizhou.

Moving forwards, plans are for the Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone to accelerate its establishment as an industry highland by continuing to attract health businesses.
