In February 2005, the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and the provincial government decided to set up a medical industry park and a Chinese medical city in Taizhou, located in East China's Jiangsu province.

In November 2006, construction started on the Taizhou Medical High-tech Zone. It was upgraded to a national-level high-tech zone, becoming the only medical high-tech zone in the country at the time in March 2009.

In June 2021, the Taizhou Medical Hi-tech Zone and Gaogang district officially launched integrated development, establishing five parks focusing on biomedicine, chemical new materials, electronics and information technology, high-end equipment manufacturing, and ports.

The integrated zone covers a total land area of 402.87 square kilometers, with 511 industrial enterprises above designated size and 373 high-tech enterprises. In 2024, it achieved a regional GDP of 112 billion yuan ($15.54 billion) and a general public budget revenue of 10.51 billion yuan.

Its biomedicine industrial park, or China Medical City, launched in November 2006, is China's first national-level medical hi-tech zone. With a planned area of 30 sq km, it has attracted over 1,300 pharmaceutical enterprises, including 14 global pharmaceutical giants such as AstraZeneca, Nestlé Health Science, and Boehringer Ingelheim.

The industrial park for electronics and information technology, spanning 31.4 sq km, focuses on developing the electronics, intelligent manufacturing, and modern service industries.

Established in 2000, the zone's industrial park for chemical new materials, or Taizhou Binjiang Industrial Park, serves as a core area of the zone. Covering an area of 9.58 sq km, it specializes in high-end petrochemicals, new materials, and health-related industries.

The zone's high-end equipment manufacturing industrial park, or the Jiangsu Taizhou Port Economic Development Zone, was established in 2002 with a planned area of 28.72 square kilometers. It adheres to a "1+2" modern industrial system, with new energy vehicles and components as the main focus, supported by the food and beverage and high-end medical equipment industries.

The zone's port industrial park, with a total planned area of 55.9 sq km, adheres to a "1+3+1" industrial framework.

The first "1" refers to port services, the "3" refers to active pharmaceutical ingredients and pharmaceuticals, port-side manufacturing, intelligent manufacturing, and the second "1" refers to urban-industry integration services.
