Fish farmers in the Hailing district of Taizhou city – in East China's Jiangsu province – welcomed their harvest season recently, with the catch adding extra fun to the upcoming Spring Festival.

Fish farmer Liang Zhigang recently organized a fishing group to catch freshwater fish in his fishpond in Huanggang town.

"Before the Spring Festival, we planned to catch five or six nets of fish, mainly sold to Shanghai city, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces," said Liang, adding that his fishpond can generate a net income of an estimated 400,000 yuan ($55,913) annually.

In Baili community in Suchen town, some catch will be sold in the market, while the remaining part will be distributed to residents at no cost, to create good wishes.

As the saying in Chinese goes, nian nian you yu, which translates to "abundance year after year." The word for "fish" in Chinese is similar to the word for abundance.

Statistics show that Hailing district has a freshwater aquaculture area of 33,700 mu (2,247 hectares), which mainly breeds river crabs, crayfish and crucian carp, among others. As a star breeding species in Hailing, river crabs account for 64 percent of the total aquaculture area.
