China's foreign trade up 15.3% in first five months

China's foreign trade grew by 15.3 percent on a yearly basis to 20.68 trillion yuan ($3.05 trillion) in the first five months of 2026, according to data released by the General Administration of Customs on Tuesday.

The country's exports rose 11.8 percent year-on-year to 11.91 trillion yuan, while its imports jumped 20.5 percent on a yearly basis to 8.77 trillion yuan.

China's trade with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations reached 3.52 trillion yuan between January and May, up 16.6 percent on a yearly basis, while its imports and exports to the European Union grew by 10.3 percent year-on-year to 2.53 trillion yuan.

Over the same period, China's trade with economies participating in the Belt and Road Initiative surged 13.6 percent year-on-year to 10.57 trillion yuan.

In May alone, China's total goods trade stood at 4.45 trillion yuan, up 16.9 percent year-on-year, according to the data.
