Taixing city – administered by Taizhou city in Jiangsu province – has been exploring innovative river management and protection models, to achieve clear and beautiful rivers that benefit its residents.
In Gensi town's Lixiuhe village, a 500-meter river there mainly provides irrigation for surrounding fields. Its old engineering configuration left behind residual problems of mud deposits and river congestion.
To fix things, the village used robust and safe materials to reinforce the river slopes and prevent erosion of the riverbanks. The result was an improvement of both the river environment and irrigation conditions.
Elsewhere, in Zhangzhu village in Fenjie town, the village appointed a professional landscape greening company to improve open spaces along the Beitang River.
"We have invested 1.2 million yuan ($165,899) in an eight-year cycle for rental management and protection, which has saved about 150,000 yuan annually in management and protection funds for the village collective," said Wang Wenyi, a village official.
"At present, we have completed the planting of green seedlings in an open space and we expect to achieve economic benefits starting from 2025," Wang added.
In recent years, Taixing city has made ever greater efforts in the comprehensive management of its waterways. It has treated 152 kilometers of rural river courses and established 46 ecological river courses spanning 96 km.
