Hailing district in Taizhou, East China's Jiangsu province, saw robust growth in consumption during the five-day May Day holiday that ended on May 3, as many local businesses made all-out efforts to boost demand.

During the holiday, the sales generated from eight key Hailing commerce and trade businesses reached 66.68 million yuan ($9.65 million), up 35 percent year-on-year. The turnover from five key catering and accommodation businesses in the district reached an estimated 6.5 million yuan, an increase of 153 percent year-on-year.

More than 30 promotion activities were held by Hailing trade and commerce businesses, including a raft of fairs and night markets.

In terms of jewelry and cosmetics, the total sales of gold jewelry topped 30 million yuan, up 26 percent year-on-year, while sales of cosmetics increased 22 percent to 5.61 million yuan.

Automobile consumption subsidies were also offered by Hailing, thus driving consumption of automobiles to over 40 million yuan. Consumers applied for 222 vehicles from 13 key automobile sales companies, a year-on-year increase of 64 percent.
