A solar energy research and development center co-built by the Hailing district of Taizhou city, in East China's Jiangsu province and Sun Yat-sen University – located in South China's Guangdong province – was unveiled on June 3.

It was established to meet the surging demand for applied basic research and cutting-edge technology research and development, due to the rapid agglomeration of the photovoltaic industries in Hailing.

With a floor space of nearly 1,300 square meters, the center aims to create a technology service system that integrates production, study, research and applications.

This will aim to improve the aggregation of cutting-edge photovoltaic materials and technologies in the new energy industry park in Hailing, said Gao Pingqi, vice-president of the School of Materials at Sun Yat-sen University.

The center will also create a talent think tank to enhance talent training and cultivation, as well as serve to promote the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements, Gao added.

The Jiudao Huanhu Ecological Park, where the center is located, opened on the same day. The park consists of nine islands and possesses a lake formed by the convergence of nine water systems.

The application of photovoltaic power generation will also be showcased in the park, including a photovoltaic industry exhibition hall, a zero-carbon demonstration cabin and solar powered sculptures.
