A conference aimed at exploring the origins of the regional civilization of East China's Jiangsu province was held on Aug 22 in Xinghua city – administered by Taizhou city, in the region.

Exploring the origin of regional civilization is a project that safeguards the roots of national culture, said Yin Jun, mayor of Xinghua.

The city will bolster the protection of cultural relics and heritage and showcase the unique charms of excellent local traditional culture, in a bid to contribute more to the exploration of the sources of the regional civilization in Jiangsu, he added.

In terms of the origins of Xinghua itself, as early as over 7,000 years ago, ancestors were living in the area. Ruins such as the Caoyangang Site, Yingshantou Site, Jiangzhuang Site, Donggu Site, Nandang Site and the Gengjiaduo Site are distributed throughout the city's footprint.

Moreover, the city boasts two provincial-level historical and cultural blocks and 110 cultural relics protection units within its confines. Of these, three are key national cultural relics protection units and 12 are provincial-level cultural relics protection units.
