Manufacturer Xinghua Zhuhong Wooden Boat Cultural Industry Co Ltd – located in Zhuhong town in Xinghua city, in East China's Jiangsu province – recently received national recognition.
It was included on the list of 2023-2025 National Intangible Cultural Heritage Production Protection Demonstration Bases.
The company uses traditional wooden boat-building methods, which still have a certain commercial and practical value in modern life.
The Zhuhong wooden boat manufacturing technique involves over 10 processes – including materials selection and preparation, cutting, batching, splicing and casting – all of which are done by hand. The whole technique is quite complex, with a high degree of difficulty.
To protect this traditional cultural heritage, Xinghua's culture department and the government of Zhuhong town have established a leading group for the protection of wooden boat manufacturing techniques. The town's finance department allocates funds every year for their protection and research.
