The distinctive industries of scallions, hairy crabs, and rice have become pivotal to the rural vitalization efforts in Xinghua, Jiangsu province. These sectors serve as the backbone of the local economy, driving growth and prosperity.
Currently, Xinghua produces over 800,000 metric tons of scallions annually, generating more than 2 billion yuan ($295.44 million) in revenue and accounting for over 80 percent of global exports.
The city's premium crabs boast an average yield of over 165 kilograms per mu (2,475 kg per hectare), while its rice trade exceeds 5 million tons annually, with a turnover surpassing 8 billion yuan.
So what underpins the success of these industries in Xinghua? The answer can be found in the concerted efforts of local administrative departments and industry associations.
Through policy briefings, technical training, and business-farmer meetings, industry associations, in collaboration with local authorities, have been delivering up-to-date information and seamless services to local enterprises, establishing a robust foundation for agricultural development in Xinghua.
Guided by these associations, such sectors have embraced standardized development and are pursuing intelligent transformation.
For instance, to overcome challenges like export registration and quality standards, the Xinghua Scallion Cultivation Association has established three major export vegetable registration bases and promoted standardized cultivation and comprehensive quality control.
Consequently, Xinghua scallions have been included in the first batch of Chinese geographical indications protected by the European Union, significantly boosting their international competitiveness.
