Lettuce and celery from the vegetable greenhouse base in Gexu village, Jiangyan district of Taizhou, Jiangsu province, have entered peak harvest season, with same-day picking and direct shipment to multiple destinations in Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces.
Villagers are making the most of the fine weather to speed up the harvest, filling baskets, transferring produce, sorting and loading it onto trucks.
"Right now, Gexu village has more than 100 greenhouses covering about 200 mu (about 13 hectares). Each day, we bring in about 20,000 jin (about 10,000 kilograms) of lettuce and 10,000 jin of small celery," said Yang Ruijun, the base manager.
"Lettuce is sent to Foshan in Guangdong province the same day it's harvested, and the celery is shipped to Hangzhou in Zhejiang province on the same day," Yang said.
To ensure a steady supply of fresh vegetables to out-of-province markets, the base organizes more than 20 villagers each day to work in a streamlined process, from harvesting and bundling to packing and shipping, preserving the freshness of spring vegetables all the way from field to table.
Gexu village has made the most of its local resources in recent years by bringing idle land back into use, introducing high-quality crop varieties and advanced planting techniques.
These efforts have breathed new life into traditional agriculture and steadily strengthened the village's collective economy.
