An ecological security buffer zone has been developed in Taixing High-tech Zone, which is located in Taixing, East China's Jiangsu province, to improve the effluent quality of sewage treatment plants.
The ecological security buffer zone refers to the transitional zone that can absorb, degrade, and purify environmental pollution, while boasting functions like conserving water sources, maintaining biodiversity, as well as stabilizing ecology.
The buffer zone used to be a borrowing area for highways, with uneven terrain and a dirty environment. A water purification project, with an investment of 13.81 million yuan ($2 million), was launched there, reducing the impact of wastewater on the environment.
At present, the buffer zone can purify an estimated 1,500 metric tons of sewage per day.
Aquatic plants with a purification effect were also grown in the buffer zone, which helps transform sewage into ecological water.
In the future, Taixing High-tech Zone will continue to enhance management support, especially the maintenance of aquatic plants, said zone official Jiang Jie.
