A piece called Polychrome Wood Carving of Bird Flock, a wood carving work from Taizhou city, East China's Jiangsu province, drew admiration from visitors when it featured at the China Pavilion at the 2025 World Exposition in Osaka, Japan, on May 20-23.
Polychrome wood carving is a form of Taizhou wood carving, a representative intangible cultural heritage project in Jiangsu. In fact, it is also the only traditional arts and crafts style protected by Jiangsu in the Taizhou area.
The work exhibited on this occasion was mainly made of unique ginkgo wood from Taizhou, because it is delicate and not easily cracked or deformed.
The work has been admired by many and it once won the Chinese Arts and Crafts "Hundred Flowers Award" Gold Prize.
"The requirements for creators of polychrome wood carving are relatively high," said Shuai Chunyan, creator of the work, who is also an inheritor of Taizhou Woodcarving provincial intangible cultural heritage, adding that they need to have a solid foundation in wood carving and possess certain professional painting skills.
