Construction has begun on a biological safety and smart medical equipment manufacturing base developed by Jiangsu Qualia Equipment Manufacturing in China Medical City, Taizhou, with a total investment of 100 million yuan ($14.38 million).

The project is set to strengthen the park's medical device ecosystem by filling a long-standing gap in specialized sterilization and disinfection equipment.

The first-phase production line for biological safety protection equipment is expected to enter mass production as early as March. The second phase, including radio-frequency plasma VHP sterilization equipment and AI laboratory robots, is scheduled to be fully operational by January 2029.

Once completed, the project is expected to generate an initial annual output value of more than 50 million yuan.

Founded in 2019, Jiangsu Qualia is the manufacturing arm of Shanghai Qualia Biotechnology. The company has achieved a market share of around 30 percent in biological safety protection equipment and ranks among the industry's leading players.

The radio-frequency plasma VHP sterilization equipment stands out for its environmental friendliness, leaving only water and oxygen as residue. The technology delivers far higher efficiency than traditional methods while avoiding corrosion of precision electronic components, making it well suited for applications in hospitals and research institutions. With future cost optimization, the technology is also expected to expand into the household market.

AI robots for biological laboratories represent another key focus. According to Zhang Junfeng, the general manager, the robots integrate cutting-edge technologies such as digital twins and multimodal sensing to automate and precisely control laboratory procedures. They can significantly improve research efficiency and ensure standardized experimental data, accelerating innovation for companies in the park, Zhang said.

Zhang noted that the decision to locate the project in China Medical City followed multiple on-site evaluations. With nearly 400 companies engaged in diagnostic reagents and medical devices already clustered in the park, China Medical City offers a complete industrial chain that enables rapid validation and commercialization of new technologies. He also cited strong support from the local market regulation authority, which facilitated administrative procedures and helped pave the way for rapid production.
