Taizhou: A city transformed by connectivity and innovation

Taizhou, Jiangsu, celebrated its 30th anniversary as a prefecture-level city on Aug 12, marking three decades of transformation from a city once constrained by limited connectivity into a growing hub for innovation and industrial development.

When Taizhou was built in 1996, the Yangtze River was both a valuable resource and a barrier. Over the past 30 years, that has undergone dramatic change.

Bridges have stretched across the Yangtze, railways have connected the city to national trunk networks, and Yangzhou Taizhou International Airport has opened an important gateway to the outside world.

But better connectivity alone could not guarantee faster growth. Taizhou, therefore, turned its attention to a deeper transformation – making innovation and talent central to its development.

The establishment of the Taizhou (Shanghai) Offshore Innovation Center marked an important step in that journey. Taizhou has since established additional offshore innovation centers, helping it develop a model in which research and development takes place elsewhere while technologies are commercialized in Taizhou.

The approach has allowed the city to tap into global talent without requiring everyone to relocate. Today, six offshore innovation centers in Shanghai have attracted 61 R&D projects and helped bring 12 projects to Taizhou.

Over three decades, Taizhou has not only built bridges across the Yangtze. It has also built bridges connecting itself with national networks, global talent and the frontiers of innovation – opening a new chapter for the city at 30.
