ICGEB-led project brings global biotech innovation to China Medical City

The China Research Center of the International Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) has recently launched a new initiative in China Medical City, Taizhou, aiming to create a more systematic pathway for bringing international biomedical talent, technologies, and projects to China.

"Rather than relying on isolated connections between individual institutions, the project will focus on precisely identifying and attracting top overseas talent, cutting-edge technologies and high-quality projects," said Yang Yili, director of the ICGEB China Research Center. "We are also building a standardized, end-to-end and replicable mechanism to support their introduction and commercialization."

The program will concentrate on China Medical City's key strengths, including vaccines, biopharmaceuticals and diagnostic reagents. It will identify overseas projects with mature technologies, strong market relevance and a clear interest in pursuing commercialization in China. By drawing on the research center's international scientific network, it aims to bridge the gap between global innovation and local industrial demand.

One early success story has already taken shape. Taizhou-based Cowingene Biotech has established a cooperation framework with a Malaysian research team focused on molecular point-of-care diagnostic technologies. The partnership is expected to help the company overcome technical bottlenecks, strengthen its competitive edge and seize new opportunities in the fast-growing diagnostics sector.
