A photograph exhibition about the professional life of Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang (1894-1961) went online on Nov 17, to offer the public better access to his beautiful world.
The event – entitled Peking Opera Maestro Mei Lanfang: His Art, His Life – was organized by the government of Taizhou city, located in East China's Zhejiang province, the Mei Lanfang Memorial Museum and the National Museum of China.
The exhibition was initially displayed at the National Museum of China in January.
The online edition has the same exhibition structure and exhibits as the on-site one. A giant poster is presented on the right side of the virtual entrance, while over 50 images of the characters that Mei Lanfang once played on stage are displayed on the left side.
Starting from a preface hall, the exhibition features eight sections which are based on Mei’s artistic life throughout different periods. They cover his family background, the development of the Mei school of Peking Opera, Mei's artistic accomplishments, his patriotic spirit and the influence and spread of Mei Lanfang artistic culture.

The exhibition shows nearly 400 pieces of material objects and 600 pictures. These include cultural artifacts, celebrity paintings and calligraphy collected by Mei Lanfang – among them his scripts, stage photos, letters and official documents, as well as precious relics and documents related to Mei's artistic life. Many of the exhibits are making their public debut. Visitors can enjoy the exhibits in order, or view them according to the exhibit names.
