The five monitored scenic spots in Taizhou city – in East China's Jiangsu province – received 143,798 tourists during the Jan 21-27 Chinese New Year holiday, a surge of 230.27 percent year-on-year.

The monitored scenic spots are the Fengcheng River scenic area, the Qinhu River scenic area, Qintong Ancient Town, Gaogang Diaohua Mansion (building of carvings) and the Lizhong Aquatic Forest in Xinghua.

The city's 10 scenic spots governed by Taizhou Culture and Tourism Group offered free tickets on Jan 22-27.

Taizhou's scenic spots held a great range of folk culture activities during the break to create a rich vibe and attract visitors. For example, Ancient Street, the Wanghai Pavilion and Taiyuan Park in the Fengcheng River scenic area held cultural activities like lion dances and opera performances, offering a cultural feast to visitors.

It's a tradition in Taizhou to go to the opera in the Lunar New Year. Traditional operas were performed on an ancient stage in Ancient Street every day on Jan 22-27.

The city of Taizhou is the home town of Beijing Opera master Mei Lanfang. Mei's style classic works, such as The Drunken Beauty, were staged on Jan 22-26 in the Memorial Hall of Mei Lanfang.

In addition, 132 cultural venues in the city – including the Taizhou Cultural Center, library, art gallery and museum – were active through the holiday. They put on art displays, fine exhibitions, stage performances and other colorful cultural activities both on site and online.
