In September, around 150 mu (10 hectares) of radiant sunflowers in the He'an scenic area – in the Hailing district of Taizhou city, in East China's Jiangsu province – are blooming and they'll keep on blooming until October.
It's one of China's major oil crops known for its high oil content, excellent oil quality and strong disease resistance. Sunflowers are easy to grow and manage, making them highly profitable.
By early October, the sunflower shells turn yellow, seeds blacken and kernels harden. About 10 days later, they mature. Each mu of sunflowers can yield over 300 kilograms of sunflower seeds. With 1.25 kg of seeds producing 0.5 kg of oil. The scenic area can extract over 100 kg of oil per mu, generating about 1,700 yuan ($232.60) in income per mu.
